Over 369,000 Syrians return from Lebanon since Assad’s fall

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian border authorities announced on Monday that 369,000 Syrians have voluntarily returned from Lebanon to Syria since the fall of the Assad government, with return movements continuing through the end of May.

The General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs said that around 35,000 Syrian citizens crossed into the country through the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing between the beginning of the year and the end of May.

According to the authority, more than 2,700 vehicles carrying furniture and household belongings accompanied the returnees through the crossing. The vehicles were allowed entry and exempted from customs fees under measures introduced to facilitate the return process.

The authority added that a total of 150,000 Syrian citizens returned from Lebanon through various border crossings during the first five months of 2026. Approximately 6,700 vehicles loaded with furniture and household goods entered the country alongside them.

Lebanon has hosted hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011. Recent months have seen increasing numbers of Syrians returning to their home areas following political changes in Syria and the introduction of procedures aimed at facilitating voluntary returns.

The figures released by the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs cover return movements recorded at official border crossings between Lebanon and Syria through the end of May.
