U.S. military launches airstrikes on ISIS targets in northeastern Nigeria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. military on Monday announced that it had carried out airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) positions in northeastern Nigeria.
US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a statement that “in coordination with the Government of Nigeria, conducted additional kinetic strikes against ISIS in Northeastern Nigeria.”
It added that the operations resulted in no casualties among U.S. or Nigerian forces.
On May 15, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the killing of Ali Abu Bilal al-Minuki, described as the second-highest leader in ISIS’s global command structure, during a joint U.S.-Nigerian operation.
Nigeria’s Borno State has faced a 17-year insurgency led by Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa Province (ISWAP), a conflict that has killed thousands and displaced nearly two million people.
