Syria arrests security members over religious insult in Suwayda

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Interior Ministry announced on Sunday the arrest of internal security members accused of insulting religious symbols in Suwayda, saying legal measures have been taken against them in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

In a statement, the ministry said the individuals involved were detained after the incident, adding that authorities had begun the necessary legal procedures.

“The Ministry of Interior clarifies that these behaviors are categorically rejected and do not represent the principles of the security institution or the values on which the Syrian state is based,” the statement read.

The ministry stressed that the Syrian state includes citizens from various religious and social backgrounds and that respecting citizens’ dignity and protecting religious and social symbols of all communities without discrimination are fundamental to the work of its institutions.

According to the statement, “any abuse or insult directed at any component or its symbols, by any person regardless of their position, is considered behavior that violates the law and the applicable regulations.”

The ministry added that Syria’s religious and social diversity has long been a source of strength for society, emphasizing that maintaining mutual respect among all citizens is a key pillar for strengthening stability and civil peace.

The statement did not provide details about the number of detainees or the circumstances of the incident in Suwayda.
