KRG denies involvement in plan to arm Iranian Kurdish groups
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) denied on Thursday reports alleging that the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) is involved in a plan to arm Iranian Kurdish opposition groups and send them into Iran.
Peshawa Hawramani, Spokesperson for the KRG, said the reports are “completely unfounded.”
“Reports that speak about a role of the Kurdistan Region and the allegations claiming that we are part of a plan to arm and send Kurdish opposition parties into Iranian territory are completely unfounded,” Hawramani said in a statement on his official X.
He added that the KRG and political parties in the region are not involved in any effort to expand the ongoing conflict in the region.
“We categorically deny them and affirm that they are being published deliberately and maliciously,” he added.
Hawramani stressed that the Kurdistan Region instead supports efforts aimed at reducing tensions.
“On the contrary, we call for peace and stability in the region,” he said, while condemning attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region.
He also urged the Iraqi government and the international community to intervene to stop the assaults and ensure the protection of the region and its residents.
The statement comes amid rising tensions in the region following the escalation of hostilities between the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other, as well as reports suggesting that Iranian Kurdish armed groups could launch cross-border operations from Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Kurdistan Region has also been targeted in recent months by drone and missile attacks attributed to Iranian-aligned forces, with strikes reported near Erbil, raising security concerns for both local authorities and international forces stationed in the area.
Regional officials have repeatedly said the Kurdistan Region should not become a battleground for wider regional conflicts.
