Protest in Idlib demands release of detainees

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Dozens of residents gathered on Saturday in the city of Idlib, northwestern Syria, to demand the release of detainees previously arrested by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham over their opposition to the group and alleged affiliation with Hizb ut-Tahrir.

Local sources told North Press that the gathering took place in al-Sa’a (clock) Square in central Idlib, where protesters raised banners calling for the immediate release of the detainees and clarification of their fate.

Participants said they would continue protests if authorities failed to respond to their demands.

According to the sources, demonstrators stressed that the detainees were arrested because of their political views rather than participation in armed activities.

The demonstrators called for clear legal guarantees and respect for public freedoms in the region.

Families of the detainees are facing difficult humanitarian conditions due to the absence of breadwinners, the sources added, as relatives remain concerned over the lack of information about detention conditions and the possibility of visits or communication.

Protesters also urged the Syrian government to open dialogue with local residents and address the issue through transparent legal procedures, warning that public anger could grow if the matter remains unresolved.

Earlier in February, the Syrian government released dozens of detainees affiliated with Hizb ut-Tahrir from a prison in the city of Harem in Idlib northern countryside.

Areas in northwest Syria witness occasional protests linked to detention cases and public freedoms. Residents have repeatedly called for arrests to be conducted under clear legal frameworks to reduce social tensions and promote local stability.
