Iraq receives 4,583 ISIS detainees transferred from Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iraq announced late Tuesday that it had taken custody of 4,583 members of the Islamic State group (ISIS) who were transferred from Syria.
Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that on Monday, Iraq received 4,583 ISIS members who had been detained in Syria.
Maan added that the transfers are being carried out both by land and air in coordination with the U.S.-led Global Coalition.
The detainees are among up to 7,000 prisoners whom the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced last month would begin being transferred from Syria to Iraq, according to AFP.
Last week, Iraq’s judiciary said it had initiated investigation procedures against 1,387 detainees received as part of a U.S. military operation.
According to Iraqi security sources, those transferred to Iraq include Syrian, Iraqi, and European nationals, as well as individuals holding other citizenships.
