US lawmaker calls Syria-SDF deal progress, but insufficient
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Brian Mast, chair of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Tuesday that last month’s agreement between Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharrah and SDF Commander General Mazloum Abdi is “a step in the right direction, but still insufficient.”
Speaking during a congressional briefing on Syria, Mast emphasized that “attacks targeting the Syrian Democratic Forces, allies of the United States, are unacceptable.”
He added that Washington remains concerned about developments in Syria, noting that the current situation “is far from what it should be.”
Mast also stressed that Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharrah has not received a “blank check” from the United States, underscoring the conditional nature of US engagement with Damascus regarding northeast Syria.
The remarks came amid ongoing US oversight of agreements affecting the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the SDF, highlighting Washington’s continued focus on regional security and minority protection.
