Kobani without water for nearly 20 days as electricity cuts persist
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – The Kobani Water Directorate said in a statement on Wednesday that water supplies to the city have been cut off for nearly 20 days.
The statement noted, “At the Kobani Water Directorate, we announce that since Jan. 18, 2026, we have been living under a suffocating siege, during which all basic necessities of life have been cut off.”
It explained that the main reason behind the water outage is the disruption of electricity supply, which has led to a complete halt in water pumping operations.
The Kobani Water Directorate added that displaced people who have arrived in the city are living under extremely harsh conditions due to the absence of basic services, foremost among them access to water.
The statement stressed that repairing the electricity network and restoring power are urgent and essential steps to ensure the resumption of water services and to ease the growing humanitarian suffering.
On Jan. 24, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that Kobani was isolated from the outside world and that civilians were at risk of severe shortages of essential supplies.
