837 Iraqis leave Hawl Camp in coordinated return to Iraq
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – A total of 837 Iraqi nationals, comprising 230 families, left on Monday Hawl Camp in Hasakah Governorate, northeastern Syria, heading to Iraq following coordination between the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the Iraqi government.
Jihan Hannan, co-chair of Hawl Camp, told North Press that this latest departure marks the 32nd batch of Iraqi families to leave the camp since the start of the repatriation process.
She said that it is the 15th group of Iraqi families to depart Hawl Camp since the beginning of this year.
Earlier in December, 240 Iraqi families left the camp under a similar coordination mechanism with the Iraqi authorities, as part of ongoing efforts to gradually reduce the camp’s population.
Hawl Camp houses tens of thousands of people, most of them women and children linked to the Islamic State (ISIS), and has long been a focal point of international calls for countries to repatriate their nationals.
