Heavy clashes as SDF thwarts ISIS assault in eastern Syria

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Thursday that it repelled an attack launched by an Islamic State (ISIS) cell against one of its positions in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Earlier in the day, four SDF fighters were killed and two others wounded in a separate armed assault on a security patrol in the same area.

In a statement released Thursday evening, the SDF confirmed that five of its members lost their lives and a sixth was injured in the clashes that erupted during the ISIS attack.

The statement added that SDF fighters managed to thwart the cell’s plan to seize its position, stressing that combing operations are ongoing in the area to track down the assailants.

The eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor continues to witness repeated ISIS assaults, as sleeper cells attempt to destabilize the region. The SDF, with backing from the Global Coalition, maintains regular operations to contain these threats and secure local communities.
