U.S. State Dept. confirms death of American citizen in Suwayda clashes
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. State Department confirmed on Tuesday the death of an American citizen during the recent outbreak of violence in Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria last week.
In an exclusive statement to North Press, a State Department official expressed deep concern over the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family.
“We offer condolences to the family on their loss and are providing consular assistance to them,” the official said, emphasizing that the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad remains a top priority.
According to the statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio repeatedly stressed the importance of safeguarding American citizens worldwide.
The American citizen was killed amid fierce fighting in Suwayda, where clashes between Druze factions and armed groups from Bedouin tribes erupted, resulting in more than 1,000 dead and injured. Government involvement further complicated the situation on the ground.
Although a fragile ceasefire has been in place for the past two days, tensions remain high. Druze factions continue to block the entry of any Syrian government delegation into the region.
“We are greatly concerned when any U.S. citizen is harmed overseas, wherever they are,” the State Department official said. “The United States calls for accountability in all cases where U.S. citizens are harmed abroad.”
