Germany Signals Support for Syria’s Reconstruction in Call with President Al-Sharaa

BERLIN, Germany (North Press) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a phone call on Friday with Ahmad al-Sharaa, Syria’s transitional president, offering Berlin’s support for the country’s reconstruction following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

This follows a similar call from French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week, making Scholz the second major European leader to engage with Syria’s new leadership.

German Commitment to Syria’s Future

In a statement, the German government spokesperson confirmed that Scholz’s call lasted for an hour, during which he congratulated the Syrian people on ending Assad’s rule.

The two leaders reportedly discussed:

  • The importance of a comprehensive political transition involving all Syrians.
  • The protection of civil rights and political freedoms.
  • The continued need to combat terrorism for Syria’s and global security.

A Shift in EU Policy?

Germany’s willingness to support Syria’s reconstruction signals a potential policy shift within the European Union, as discussions continue in Brussels regarding lifting sanctions on the transitional government.

With European leaders now engaging directly with Damascus, Syria’s new political chapter appears to be gaining international recognition.
