BAGHDAD, Iraq (North Press) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of inclusive governance in Syria during their meeting in Baghdad on Friday. The discussion focused on the recent developments in Syria and the role of regional and international cooperation in stabilizing the war-torn nation.

The meeting follows Blinken’s visit to Turkey, as the U.S. seeks to address the evolving situation in Syria following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime earlier this month.

Commitment to Syria’s Stability

According to a statement released by the Iraqi Prime Minister’s media office, Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to supporting Syria’s recovery and stressed the need for regional and international efforts to assist in rebuilding the country.

Al-Sudani highlighted Iraq’s position on ensuring the participation of all Syrian communities in governing the country. “Inclusive governance is crucial for achieving stability and addressing the challenges that threaten Syria’s social harmony,” he stated.

He also underscored Iraq’s expectations for concrete actions from Syria’s transitional authorities, rather than mere promises, as the country navigates its post-conflict transition.

Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s stance against any form of aggression on Syrian territory, emphasizing that such actions pose a threat to regional security and stability.

U.S. Support for Syrian Aspirations

Blinken echoed these sentiments, stressing the United States’ commitment to respecting the Syrian people’s choices. “The U.S. agrees with Iraq on the necessity of forming an inclusive government that reflects the will of the Syrian people and the diversity of its communities,” he said.

The Secretary of State also highlighted the importance of fostering regional cooperation to support Syria’s reconstruction and ensure a peaceful transition to a stable governance model.

Regional and Global Cooperation

The discussions in Baghdad come amid growing calls for international involvement in Syria’s reconstruction and stabilization. The recent fall of Damascus to opposition forces has shifted focus to the need for a comprehensive political solution that includes all Syrian factions.

Iraq, sharing a long border with Syria, plays a critical role in regional stability and has frequently advocated for diplomatic solutions to address Syria’s challenges.

Path Forward

The meeting between Al-Sudani and Blinken underscores the urgent need for regional and international collaboration in shaping Syria’s future. With millions displaced, infrastructure devastated, and trust between communities fractured, the emphasis on inclusive governance is seen as a vital step toward rebuilding Syria as a united and stable state.

The transition period will be a litmus test for the new Syrian leadership and its ability to bring together a diverse population that has endured over a decade of conflict.

As the international community watches closely, Iraq and the United States have pledged to continue their dialogue and support efforts to bring peace and prosperity to Syria.
