AANES getting ready to hold local elections in NE Syria
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) revealed on Monday that three million voters will vote to choose the co-chairs of 121 municipalities in Northeast Syria on May 30.
The High Election Commission of the AANES is preparing to hold local elections on May 30, which will be the first elections after signing the Social Contract.
The AANES defines the Social Contract, which acts as North and East Syria’s constitution, as a set of theoretical and practical foundations, laws, and organizational rules which are established to determine the relationship between the administration and the people, and to clarify the rights and duties of people and officials within society.
Roken Ibrahim, co-chair of the High Election Commission, said that voters would vote to choose the co-chairs of municipalities distributed across seven cantons.
The cantons of the AANES includes the Jazira (Hasakah Governorate), Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Kobani, Tabqa, Manbij, and Shahba Region (Aleppo northern countryside where Afrin IDPs have been taking shelter since 2018).
Ibrahim added that the AANES-held region houses more than six million people, over half of whom are 18 years old or older and therefore have the right to vote.
She pointed out that 27 licensed parties in Northeast Syria are eligible to participate in the election.
