Landmine blast kills 2 truffle hunters in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two people were killed on Saturday in a landmine blast while they were picking up truffle in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria.

A local source from Deir ez-Zor said that Abdulhay al-Hamadi and Aziz al-Assaf were killed in a landmine blast while riding a motorcycle during the truffle hunting in the Bishri desert in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

The area where the two young men were killed is designated for the National Defense Forces (NDF) affiliated with the Syrian government forces to truffle hunting. It is suggested that the mines were installed in order to deter civilians from picking truffles in that area.

Since the start of the truffle season, dozens of people have been killed in accidents and mysterious killings. Truffle hunting season of 2023 resulted in the killing and injury of around 300 people.

In another incident, girl Anfal al-Dabbash was injured by an unidentified gunshot while she was in her family’s house in the village of al-Jarzi in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor. She was taken to a hospital in the village in critical condition, according to a doctor at the hospital.
