AANES launches women basketball championship in Syria’s Raqqa
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Sports Union of Northern and Eastern Syria launched on Sunday a women’s basketball championship in the city of Raqqa, northern Syria. Three teams participated in the championship.
Amina Muhammad, head of Women’s Office at Youth and Sports Board, affiliated with Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), said that they organized the championship with the participation of three teams consisted of 33 players from northern Syria.
She told North Press that the tournament will last for two days, with the final match on the second day. The winning team will be honored by the Youth and Sports Board and the Sports Union.
Muhammad stated that the objective of this tournament is to promote women’s sports in the region, and it is one of the activities and events organized by the Sports Union.
On May 14 2023, the AANES established the Sports Union to organize sports activities and to be the official sponsor for athletes and talent recruitment.
Nour Hajjo, a participating player in the championship from Jazira Region team, said that the purpose of her participation in such activities is to enhance her athletic skills.
Hajjo urged the relevant authorities to support and develop sports in general, and basketball in particular, highlighting the shortage of participating teams, activities, and events that focus on this sport.
On March 13, Education Committee in Raqqa, organized women basketball championship. Girls of eight schools participated in the championship that is sponsored by the local organization Women for Peace in collaboration with the Sports Union.
