Syriac, Assyrians in Qamishli demand recognition of Assyrian genocide
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syriac parties and Assyrian organizations marched in the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria, on Wednesday to demand recognition of the Sayfo massacres, also known as the Assyrian genocide, committed by the Ottoman Empire in 1915.
The participants in the march, which coincides with the 108th anniversary of the genocide, called for international recognition of the atrocities committed against the Syriac, Assyrian, and Chaldean people and the prosecution of the perpetrators.
The march, which adopted the slogan “we want international recognition of the genocide”, started from the Syriac Union Party in Qamishli, passing through the city’s streets to the Sayfo massacres’ monument on al-Qawtli Street in the city center.
At the end of the march, the Syriac parties reiterated their commitment to continue demanding recognition of this genocide until their call is answered. They further called for holding the Turkish state accountable for its legal, moral, and humanitarian responsibilities regarding those atrocities.
