Residents in Turkish-held north Syria protest against local councils
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Hundreds of residents and settlers in the cities of Tel Abyad, in northern Raqqa, and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), in northern Hasakah, protested on Wednesday against the “corruption” of their local councils, affiliated with the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA).
The protesters in Tel Abyad raised banners accusing the local council of corruption after a rise in prices for all basic goods and low prices offered to residents in exchange for their crops.
The protest marched through all the streets of Tel Abyad, where the protesters chanted the slogan “people want to overthrow corruption.”
In a video posted on social media account affiliated with the opposition, the demonstrators demanded improving the living conditions, raising wheat prices, and putting an end to corruption.
In Sere Kaniye, local sources told North Press that dozens of people from the region protested in front of the grain silos in the city, denouncing the low prices offered for wheat. The council had priced hard wheat at $330 per ton and soft wheat at $285 last Monday, June 12, sparking discontent among all farmers.
