Syria to reduce wheat imports in 2023
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria will import half as much wheat in 2023 as the last year due to boost in the domestic harvest, Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform of Syria Muhammad Hassan Qatna said on Monday.
Qatana told Reuters that last year, Syria imported 1.5 million tonnes of wheat from Russia.
“Syria will import about 50% of what it imported last year,” he added.
Ahead of Syria’s war in 2011, Syria used to produce around 4 million tonnes of wheat yearly, which is enough to feed itself and export to neighboring countries.
But with erratic rainfall patterns and the country’s traditional breadbasket in northeast the country, production has been reduced in recent years.
