QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The North Press Agency attended on Wednesday the first meeting held by the Human Rights Reference Group of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Since April, the North Press Agency and its Monitoring and Documentation Department have officially become a member of the Human Rights Reference Group of the OHCHR.
About 20 people from the Syrian Civil Society Organizations and operators in the OHCHR participated in the meeting.
Discussion tackled the OHCHR working mechanisms with the Civil Society Organizations and human rights activists, as well as ways to empower them and extend their voices and recommendations to the Syrian government, and their role in implementing these recommendations.
Periodic meetings are held every two months under different titles related to human rights issues in Syria.
On May 23, the North Press Agency and its Monitoring and Documentation Department became an official member of the Every Casualty Counts (ECC) organization.
The Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press Agency was formed in late 2022 and works on documenting the violations that take place against Syrians, including cases of killing, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest, and other issues that affect the rights of civilians, and archives them in special databases. It also presents statistics within monthly, semi-monthly and annual reports, in addition to presenting thematic reports on many societal issues in which the rights of the Syrians are violated, and investigating them through a journalistic and human rights lens.
