Iraq evacuates 16 Syrians from Sudan
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – On Thursday, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced that it had evacuated more than 230 individuals, including 16 Syrians, via two planes from Sudan to Baghdad.
Ahmad al-Sahaf, the ministry’s spokesperson, stated, “Two planes designated for evacuating Iraqis from Port Sudan are heading to Baghdad now with 234 citizens onboard.”
He added, that “there are 16 Syrian nationals” among them. Thousands have been left stranded in Sudan since the outbreak of fierce battles on April 15.
Most states have rushed to evacuate their nationals and diplomats from Sudan. But Syrians have been left appealing for any means to save them from the current situation, as the Syrian government has yet to take any action to evacuate them.
the Syrian government thanked on Wednesday those countries that helped in evacuating hundreds of Syrians from Sudan, which witnesses intensifying battles.
The fighting in Sudan, in which aircrafts and artillery were used, caused the death of at least 512 people and the injury of about 4,200 individuals, including 15 Syrians residing there, Reuters reported, citing the Chargé d’Affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Sudan.
The spokesperson said, “the Emergency Diplomatic Response Operations Room is intensifying its efforts to receive those who were evacuated to Baghdad, to provide medical ambulance and complete the fundamental procedures for those evacuated from the Arab communities.”
