Syria breaks silence thanking countries for evacuating citizens from Sudan
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Finally, the Syrian government broke the silence, thanking those countries that helped in evacuating hundreds of Syrians from Sudan, which witnesses intensifying battles.
The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, have been clashing across the country since April 15, leaving behind hundreds of casualties, most of whom are civilians.
Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates was cited on Wednesday by the stat-run SANA News Agency as saying in a statement that “with the help of the brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, hundreds of Syrians were evacuate from the city of Port Sudan, to which a team from the embassy arrived, and dozens were evacuated with the help of the brothers in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.”
The ministry added that Syria thanks “brotherly and friendly countries to assist in the evacuation process.”
It noted that the Syrian government is following with great interest the situation of Syrians residing in Sudan and wishes them and the Sudanese people security and safety, according to SANA.
“The Syrian government is keenness to help Syrian citizens wishing to evacuate from Sudan,” the statement read.
The ministry said, “The Syrian Embassy in Khartoum…has registered lists of names of citizens wishing to be evacuated, in cooperation with members of the community.”
Syrians strapped in Sudanese cities appealed to be rescued from the hot areas, but to no vain.
According to media reports, Syrians were beaten and targeted by unknown individuals, as members of RSF use civilians as human shields, which portends a catastrophic situation.
Many countries rushed to extract their citizens from Khartoum by air, sea and land, amid the ongoing deadly power struggle.
Some foreign embassies were attacked, an American diplomatic convoy was shot at, a French soldier was injured during an evacuation mission, and the assistant administrative attaché at the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum was killed while he was driving to the embassy.
