Assad replaces cabinet ministers amid collapsing economy
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued on Wednesday a decree to replace several cabinet ministers amid increasing prices and deteriorating economic conditions.
State-run SANA News Agency reported that the Syrian president replaced five ministers of oil, internal trade, industry and social affairs, and labor without revealing the reasons for the change.
The economic situation in Syria started to decline since the beginning of the conflict in 2011. Western sanctions made matters worse for the Syrian people.
In 2022, the government-held areas witnessed unprecedented economic challenges represented by the collapsing Syrian pound, inflation, and rapid increase in food prices.
The February 6 earthquake that hit Syria left behind thousands of victims and caused immense destruction of infrastructure in affected areas, aggravating the already deteriorating economy.
