EU calls for redoubling efforts to solve Syrian conflict
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The international community must “redouble its efforts” to reach a solution to the conflict in Syria, Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said on Thursday.
In a statement marking the 12th anniversary of the Syrian conflict, Borrell called on the international community to “redouble its efforts to reach a durable and comprehensive political solution for Syria.”
He said the EU countries would continue to support the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, in the search for a way forward that respects the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state.
Borrell confirmed the EU’s rejection to normalize with the “Syrian regime” unless the latter “engages meaningfully in a political solution to the conflict in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.”
The official noted to the EU’s continued support for the “partners in the Global Coalition to defeat Da’esh/ISIS” in their seeking to stabilize north and east Syria’s region to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian war, about 6.8 million Syrians have become IDPs inside the country and at least 6.8 million have been living as refugees outside Syria, according to the UN.
