Authorities in Syria’s Tartus label 117 houses for demolition
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Engineering Technical committees have so far labeled 117 houses for demolition and 587 others for reinforcement, the pro-government al-Watan newspaper reported citing a reliable source in Tartus Governorate.
The committees, which have been formed by the Syrian government to inspect the earthquake-affected buildings, have so far inspected more than 4.000 houses across the coastal governorate of Tartus in addition to 82 schools, according to the source.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northwestern Syria, killing more than 50,000 individuals. It also caused the destruction of thousands of buildings, leaving many homeless.
The houses that were suggested by the preliminary committees for demolition are now being inspected by the General Safety Committees to verify its structural status. Then the final decision of whether or not to demolish them will be put into force or simply suffice with reinforcement.
Muhammad al-Muhammad, official at Tartus Municipality, said that the committees put forth preliminary reports then the General Safety Committees finalize the results after inspection.
The final number of the houses set for demolition will be revealed after the Committees complete inspections.
