Government reveals quake-caused deaths, injuries in Latakia
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, concerned authorities in Latakia said that the earthquake which struck Syria on February 6 killed 805 people and injured 1.131 others throughout the governorate.
Governor of Latakia, Amer Hilal, said in a statement to the state-run SANA news agency, “The earthquake that struck Syria and affected the governorate left 805 deaths and 1.131 injuries, including 61 who are still receiving treatment, and the collapse of about 105 buildings.”
He added that the Engineers’ Union and other concerned bodies formed 91 engineering committees specialized in inspecting damaged buildings.
Until February 25, Hilal added, the committees “inspected 23.954 buildings, and its reports show that there are about 900 completely damaged buildings, which will be presented to the Structural Safety Committee to take a decision; either consolidation or demolition.”
Hilal noted that the governorate opened 29 shelters, which house more than 2.267 earthquake-affected families.
