Earthquake Shelters in Aleppo Begin to be Evacuated
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – A source in the Aleppo Governorate said on Saturday that more than 100 shelters have been evacuated, including schools and places of worship that used to house people affected by the earthquake that hit Syria on February 6.
The source told North Press that, as a result, 45 educational facilities will resume operation in order “to ensure the continuation of the educational process for the current academic year.”
After the earthquake, Aleppo Governorate announced that it had opened more than 235 temporary shelters, including schools, for affected people.
On Feb. 16, a source in Aleppo said that 50 families affected by the earthquake had been transferred from current shelters to previously built housing units in the Sheikh Saeed neighborhood.
The source said that 55 families who were in places of worship were transferred to the housing units in Sheikh Saeed neighborhood, south of Aleppo “to reduce the number of families who stay in one place, ensure that victims will be taken care of, and the arrival of support to those affected.”
Authorities in Aleppo seek to transfer the affected people from the shelters to homes in Hanano district, eastern Aleppo, and the Sheikh Saeed neighborhood.
There are currently about 150 centers in Aleppo for those affected by the earthquake. Specialized committees will move them to the aforementioned housing, according to the source.
