Earthquake-Affected People in Aleppo Shelters Relocate

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, a source in Aleppo Governorate said that 50 families stricken by the earthquake had been transferred from current shelters to previously built housing units in Sheikh Saeed neighborhood south of the city.

The source told North Press that 150 houses were ready to receive earthquake-affected people in Hanano neighborhood, eastern Aleppo, and that housing units in Sheikh Saeed neighborhood were almost ready and began relocating some families there.

On Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northwest Syria, leading to large-scale destruction and thousands of deaths.

Aleppo Governorate had announced earlier opening more than 235 temporary shelters, including schools, for affected people.

People in shelters in Aleppo had been notified to evacuate mosques and schools to be relocated to houses in Hanano and Sheikh Saeed neighborhoods.

The devastating earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey on Feb. 6 caused the collapse of 60 buildings in Aleppo, whereas Aleppo City Council demolished 51 at-risk buildings, according to an exclusive source.

Specialized committees that inspect damaged buildings in Aleppo noted that about 2000 compromised buildings would be checked to be demolished if proven they pose a danger.
