Turkey-Syria Earthquake’s Death Toll nears 36.000

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, the death toll of the earthquake that hit both Syria and Turkey on February 6 neared 36.000, while more than 85.000 were injured in both Turkey and Syria.

In Turkey, The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that the death toll had risen 31.643 dead and more than 80.000 injured across 10 cities in south-central and south-east Turkey.

The total number of fatalities in Syria, according to official statements by the central government, the Syrian opposition, and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), has reached 3.587 dead and 5.356 injured.

However, the UN office for humanitarian affairs (OCHA) reported in a statement on Monday that as of February 12 the earthquake had killed 4.300 people and had injured 7.600 others in northwest Syria.

The death toll continue to rise as search operations proceed and more bodies are pulled out from under the rubble in both countries.
