Turkey-Syria Earthquake’s Death Toll Surpasses 25.000
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the earthquake death toll surpassed 25.000, while more than 85.000 were injured in both Turkey and Syria five days after a catastrophic earthquake.
The total number of fatalities in Syria, according to official statements by the central government, the Syrian opposition, and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), has reached 3.559 dead and 5.333 injured.
The figures were released on Friday by the Syrian Ministry of Health and the Civil Defense in opposition-held areas in northwest of the country.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday that the death toll in Syria is expected to be more than 5.200.
In Turkey, The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that the death toll had risen to 20.665 dead and 80.088 injured across 10 cities in south-central and south-east Turkey.
While hope starts to fade of finding survivors under the rubble, death figures are expected to rise significantly, as there are still hundreds of families trapped beneath the rubble.
On Friday night, search and rescue operations for potential survivors came to an end in northwest Syria. The town of Jindires in Afrin countryside has been marked as the most devastated area in Syria following the deadly earthquake, with a death toll of 513 dead and 831 injured, in addition to the complete destruction of more than 200 buildings and the partial destruction of 500 buildings.
