Earthquake destroys earth dam in Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – An earth dam in Idlib was destroyed on Thursday by the earthquake that hit south Turkey and north Syria on Feb. 6.
Muhammad Muhammad, a local, told North Press “An earth dam located between the village of al-Tlul in the countryside of Salqin in the west of Idlib collapsed today morning owing to rising levels of the Orontes River after al-Rastan Dam in north of Homs and that of Qarqor in the Ghab Plain in west of Hama were opened.”
Water poured into houses in the village. A number of houses collapsed while the vast majority of houses were inundated with water. Villagers evacuated in the morning, he said.
Villagers are daunted that water levels of Orontes rise more and last for days that could destroy other berms in the area ushering in a new disaster.
