Earthquake death toll in Syria tops 2.668 dead
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The number of victims in Syria is climbing quickly more than 48 hours after earthquakes. The death toll surpassed 2.668 people, while about 5.042 were injured on Wednesday.
At least 1.262 people were killed and 2,285 injured in the government-held areas, according to the Syrian Ministry of Health.
The Civil Defense in northwest Syria, affiliated with the Turkish-backed opposition, recorded more than 1.400 deaths and 2.700 injuries.
The number is expected to rise significantly with hundreds still buried under rubble.
In the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the number of the victims remains the same, which is six deaths and 57 injuries, according to its Health board.
Yesterday evening, several areas in Syria witnessed aftershocks that caused the collapse of new buildings, especially in Aleppo.
Searches for victims and survivors under the rubble continue amid great difficulty, due to the freezing and rainy weather.
On Monday at 4:17 am, Syria and Turkey were rocked by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake whose epicenter was located near Gaziantep, Turkey, and killed thousands of people in the both countries.
