DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The US President Joe Biden expressed on Monday his sympathy for the tragic loss in life and devastation caused by the earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey at dawn earlier in the day.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria. I have directed my team to continue to closely monitor the situation in coordination with Turkiye and provide any and all needed assistance,” Biden said on Twitter.
“U.S.-supported humanitarian partners are also responding to the destruction in Syria,” he said in another statement.
For his part, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US response “is already underway.… We are determined to do all that we can to help those affected by these earthquakes in the days, weeks, and months ahead.”
At about 04:17 am on Monday, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude struck Turkey and Syria, leaving thousands dead and injured and caused considerable material damage.
