Turkish border guards kill Syrian attempting to cross border
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A Syrian man was killed on Monday by Turkish border guards as he attempted to enter Turkish territory through the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), north of Hasakah, northeastern Syria.
In 2023 so far, seven Syria refugees have been killed and 19 others injured by Turkish border guards. In addition, 162 people were arrested while trying to cross the Syrian-Turkish border, according to the Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press.
A local source told North Press that the 38-year-old Mamdouh Ahmad al-Mousa was killed near the village of al-Aziziya in Sere Kaniye.
Sere Kaniye has been under the control of Turkish forces and Turkish-backed Syrian opposition factions, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA), since October 2019, after a joint invasion of the region.
Al-Mosua, who hails from al-Aziziya, tried to get to Turkey in search of a job, according to the source.
On January 22, Turkish border guards assaulted around 40 people trying to cross the Syrian-Turkish border near the city of Salqin, in the northern countryside of Idlib, northwest Syria.
Most Syrians attempting the cross into Turkey are resorting to dangerous smuggling routes, as they face dire economic and living conditions, especially in Idlib.
