Aleppo, Idlib undergo mutual shelling between government, opposition

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, different areas in the de-escalation zone in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo, northwest Syria, witnessed ongoing exchange of shelling between the Syrian government forces and the opposition factions.

A military source of the opposition told North Press that the government forces targeted with scours of artillery shells and missiles different sites of the opposition in the villages and towns of al-Fatirah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, Deir Sunbul, Benin, Ruweiha and Shnan in Zawiya Mountain south of Idlib.

As a result, an individual was wounded in the village of Shnan south of Idlib, and he was transferred to the nearest medical point in the area.

The source added that the shelling targeted the villages and towns of Kafr Ta’al, Kafr Nouran, Tuqad, Kafr Amma, Makalbis, Sheikh Suleiman and al-Hbata in the western countryside of Aleppo.

Military sources in National Front for Liberation told North Press that al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations’ Room targeted, with heavy artillery, positions of the government forces in Base 46, the village of Milaja south of Idlib.

The shelling coincided with intensive flight by Russian aircrafts over areas on border with Turkey north of Idlib, reporting no airstrikes.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.

In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.

Since the beginning of July, several fronts south of Idlib and west of Aleppo have been witnessing an unprecedented military escalation, which is the first of its kind since the signing of the de-escalation agreement between Russia and Turkey in March 2020.
