DARRA, Syria (North Press) – Following days of siege, Syrian government forces (SGF) targeted, on Thursday, the city of Tafas in the western countryside of Daraa Governorate, south of Syria.
A source told North Press, that the government forces shelled the outskirts of Tafas with tanks and Shilka (Russian anti-aircraft and infantry fighting vehicle). The government forces failed to advance due to the heavy clashes with armed factions from the city.
The government advancing attempts were launched from multiple areas, the heaviest of which was launched from the southern part of Tafas, where the largest number of government soldiers and armored vehicles are stationed, the source added.
A state of fear and tension prevails among residents of Tafas after the movement from and to the city has been banned, and they were forced to close their shops.
On Wednesday, a young man was killed and three others were wounded because the government forces targeted agricultural areas surrounding Tafas with mortar and Shilka shells.
Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.
In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day-seige. After that, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, with mediation of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement on September 5, 2021, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security posts in the towns of the governorate.
