Students of AANES-run University of Kobani start final exams

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, students of Kobani University in the northern city of Syria’s Kobani which is run by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), have started making final exams for the second semester of 2021-2022.

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) defeated ISIS militarily.

Muhammad Khan Muhammad, spokesman for the University’s examination committee, said that 550 students in the University are making final exams in ten examination halls under 50 invigilators divided into two periods.

Kobani University was established on September 30, 2017, with only two faculties – the Faculty of Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences) and the Faculty of Arts (Department of Kurdish Language and Literature), in addition to five pedagogical institutes (geography, biology, English, physics and chemistry) and three scientific institutes (technical, medical and administrative).

The exams will last until July 21, Khan Muhammad added.

Marking the papers will start immediately on the day following the last day of the exam, and announcing the results will follow the marking process, according to Khan Muhammad.

On October 28 2021, the university graduated the first batch of its students, in total of 32 students, from four departments, Kurdish Literature, Physics and Chemistry, and the Laboratory Institute, four years after its opening.

The city of Kobani and its countryside were attacked by ISIS in 2014, where it took control of the entire countryside and a large area of the city. The Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), as well as contingents of Peshmerga forces from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), with support of US air force defended Kobani and liberated it on January 26, 2015.
