Syriac of Qamishli sit-in against Turkish settlement project in NE Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The head of the Syriac Women’s Union, Georgette Barsoumo, told North Press on Thursday that Turkey is working on a new settlement plan. It is more dangerous than the occupation and aims at Turfication of the region.
Barsoubo statements came at the backdrop of a sit-in by Syriac parties in the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria, rejecting the Turkish policies in the region. The sit-in will last for two days under the slogan “No to the aggressive policies of the Turkish state against the peoples of the region.”
She explained that Turkey, through the recent settlement project, wants to “strike the peace and the democratic project in the region.”
”This area is by characterized the civilizations of the peoples who have inhabited it for thousands of years. Turkey now is trying to change its identity,” she added.
On May 3, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Turkey is building homes and public facilities in parts of Syria held by the Turkish-backed forces (SNA) to support the new plan of encouraging the voluntary return of 1 million Syrian refugees.
The Turkish project, however, has been widely condemned by the communities of northeast Syria. Some observers consider it a new form of the occupation of the region.
