Turkish Shelling Of North Syria’s Tel Abyad Causes Casualties

AIN ISSA, Syria (North Press) – Using heavy artillery, Turkish forces and armed factions of the Syrian opposition backed by the Turkish government targeted Sunday night the countryside of Tel Abyad and Ain Issa, in northern Syria, resulting in casualties.

One civilian was killed and another was wounded by the Turkish shelling, according to local sources.

Dozens of villages were bombed, including Afdoki, Kolteb, Ahmadiya, Dunyak, Arida, Bir Arab, Sarzuri, Horreya, Koberlak, and Khani.

The shelling targeted the eastern and western countryside of Ain Issa town, each of the villages of Mu’allaq, Jadida, Hoshan, Debs, Khalidiya, al-Mushairfa, Jabal, al Nakhil Restaurant, and the M4 Highway. This caused the displacement of residents from villages close to the border towards the villages farther from the lines of contact.

The Turkish bombardment began on the countryside of Tel Abyad and Ain Issa during the iftar hour in the evening and continued throughout the night until the suhoor hour before dawn. The bombing coincided with the flight of a Turkish reconnaissance plane over the targeted villages.

Since the invasion of Tel Abyad in 2019 by Turkish forces and their affiliated Syrian opposition factions (also known as the Syrian National Army/SNA), people have been displaced as a result of worsening security and economic conditions.

Areas near the contact lines in northeast Syria continue to witness ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement which Turkey signed with the Russian and American guarantors in October 2019.
