Turkish escalation in NE Syria paves way for ISIS return, AANES
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) called on the guarantors of agreements with Turkey regarding Syria to intervene and stop the current escalation.
In a statement, the AANES condemned the recent Turkish “Systemic escalation” against areas in northeast Syria.
The Turkish policy negatively affects the entire country and the region in particular, according to the statement.
The AANES warned, “The continuation of these attacks will create an adequate environment for the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) revival, and Turkey deepens the roll of the Turkish-backed mercenaries in implementing the occupation policies and dividing Syria.”
Turkey is exploiting the tensioned condition around the world especially impacts of the Russian-Ukrainian war in order to implement hostile policies against residents of the AANES-held areas, the statement read.
“Turkey, through this, aims to develop more conspiratorial schemes and involve directly or indirectly into approaches with the regime on the one hand and with regional parties on the other.”
For over two weeks, Turkey has been escalating its military operations throughout northeast Syria in tandem with drones attacks the last of which targeted a car picking the female co-chair of the Self-Defense Office and two of her friends.
It is noteworthy to mention that following the Turkish incursion in October 2019 on Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US, stipulating ceasing all hostilities and the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) 32 km away from the Turkish border.
The SDF did withdrew from the border areas according to the agreement, but Turkey continues targeting the area.
