One message in Erbil attack is related to Syria: Iraqi political scientist
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – The recent missile attack on the city of Erbil conveys multiple security and political messages, one of which is related to the Israeli airstrikes on Syria, the Iraqi politician Ihsan al-Shammari, said on Sunday.
Al-Shammari, a professor of political science, gave an analysis to North Press on the wake of the attack on Erbil on the early hours of Sunday with 12 ballistic missiles.
Al-Shammari believed that one of the messages the attack conveyed is that the missiles against Erbil was in retaliation of killing officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Israeli airstrikes in Syria.
“As if the parties in charge of the attacks on Erbil,” al-Shammari withheld to mention them, “want to tell us that it has the ability to immediately retaliate.”
“I believe the attack is a warning message, too.”
“The warning is directed to Erbil as Iran and its proxies’ propaganda say Erbil is a platform where Israeli members are present,” he added.
Moreover, the attack on Erbil conveys another message which is a political one that is related to the alliances in Iraq and that they are about to create a new government, according to al-Shammari.
Ismail Qaani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s IRGC and other Iranian figures tried to hinder, on multiple occasions, the move of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) towards forming a national majority government adopted by the trilateral alliance (Masoud Barzani, Muqtada Al-Sadr, and Mohammad al-Halboosi).
Al-Shammari said he believed the Erbil attack will be exploited by some parties that seek for more pressure in order to guarantee concessions from the side of Erbil.
Earlier, Nechirvan Barzani, President of Kurdistan Region called on the federal government of Iraq and the international community to prevent “further violations of the sovereignty and stability of the country, and the security and peace of its citizens.”
Iraqi President Barham Salih condemned the attack on Erbil adding it is a terrorist crime with “suspicious” time as there are “signs of political détente”. The attack aims to obstruct the constitutional process of forming a capable government.”
