27 drug smugglers killed near Syria-Jordan border

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the Jordanian army declared it killed 27 drug smugglers and wounded others to foil attempts of smuggling large quantity of narcotic substances coming from Syria.

The Jordanian troops applied the “recently-introduced” new rules of engagement against the group of smugglers and the armed forces backing them during which 27 drug smugglers were killed and some others were wounded before they managed to flee into the Syrian territories,  a military source of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army told, the Jordanian state-run news agency, Petra.

The army combed the area and large amounts of illegal drugs were found, he said.

Search and combing still continue until the area is clear from the smugglers and the narcotics, the source added.

Recently, smuggling operations have increased as smuggling gangs exploit the poor weather conditions and the fog that makes the vision difficult.

Almost daily clashes take place between smugglers and the Jordanian Border Guards at the Syrian-Jordanian border in the south countryside of Suwayda.

On Sunday, the Jordanian Armed Forces announced the death of one of its officer and three  members as smugglers shot them on the Jordanian northeastern border and then they ran into the Syrian territories.
