Dozens killed, arrested in Syria’s Daraa in December 2021

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – At least 45 people were arrested and kidnapped during the last December, 2021. Later that month, however, 17 of them were released, the Martyrs Documentation Office in Daraa (a local human rights organization), said on Saturday.

“This statistic does not include those who were arrested with the aim of joining the reserve and mandatory military service in the government forces,” the office said. 

In its monthly report, the office noted to the continued violations against civilians in Daraa by the security services of the government forces. It also monitored the continuation of killings. 

According to the report, three security services, in addition to the Criminal Security Branch, were involved in the arrests.

The names of 19 detainees in the Criminal Security Branch, 20 detainees in the Military Intelligence Branch, three detainees in the State Security Branch, and three others in the Air Force Intelligence Branch, were documented by the office.

The report also pointed out that the security branches of the government forces arrested and forcedly hid minors from their families.

During December, 2021, Daraa witnessed the continuation of killing attempts and operations, despite the passage of two months since the second settlement agreement. 

The Martyrs Documentation Office documented 41 killing attempts and operations in December,2021, which led to killing 31 people and injuring 7 others, while 3 others survived the killing attempts. 

In its report, the office did not accuse any party of being behind those operations. 

This statistic does not include the attacks on the government forces’ checkpoints and convoys, according to the office’s monthly report. 

Regarding the distribution of the killings, the office said that 29 killing operations and attempts took place in the western countryside of Daraa, 7 operations in the eastern countryside, and 5 operations in the city. 

As for those who were killed or targeted, the office documented 13 members of the former opposition factions, including 9 who joined the ranks of the government forces after they took control of Daraa in August 2018.  

During the last month of 2021, 27 killings were carried out via direct shooting, 2 through field executions after the victim was kidnapped, and 2 were carried out by using explosive devices, according to the Martyrs Documentation Office in Daraa.
