Russian warplanes conduct military drills in northeast Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Russian air forces conducted a wide range of military drills setting off from Qamishli airport.

Huge fighting forces were utilized during the drills.

Around 29 warplanes participated in the training, including four Sukhoi SU-34, six Sukhoi Su-35, six Mil Mi-6 helicopters, four Kamov Ka-58, and the Beriev A-50, a Soviet airborne early warning and control aircraft, according to Russian news outlets.

The Russian aircrafts hovered for two hours over the skies of Qamishli city and its countryside in northeast Syria.

A month ago, the Russian forces moved an electronic warfare (EW) system to Qamishli airport to start expanding the airport with the purpose to be a new Russian airbase in the region.

In late October, the Russian forces along with Syrian government forces executed drills to destroy the ground targets near the Syrian-Turkish border northeastern Syria.

The Russian forces were deployed in northeast Syria following agreements with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after the Turkish invasion of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad in October 2019.
