€10 million to help vulnerable people in Syria: EU Commission

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the EU mobilized an additional €10 million to help people in Syria affected by the drought, European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) said.

The funding will help Syrians access water, rehabilitate vital water infrastructure, provide food and nutrition and help expand essential medical services.

The funding will also help vulnerable people throughout the winter with heating fuel, blankets, winter clothes, the ECHO added.

“The drought in Syria is posing a daunting challenge to the Syrian people who are already in a grave situation due to the ongoing crisis,” Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said, adding “We must ensure that those who need protection and aid receive it now.”

Since the start of the crisis in 2011, more than €24.9 billion has been mobilized to support the most vulnerable Syrians inside the country and across the region.

In 2021, the total EU humanitarian support to Syria reached €141 million, ECHO noted.

The EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department has been providing assistance to people in need since 1992. Its annual humanitarian budget is just over €1 billion, and helps millions of people across the globe each year.
