ISIS launches new attack between Iraq’s Erbil, Kirkuk reporting casualties

ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) –  On Monday, the Ministry of Peshmerga in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG)announced a new attack carried out by the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) in an area between Kirkuk and Erbil cities.

“ISIS launched a savage attack on Regiment 126 affiliated with the Peshmerga forces near the village of Qra Salem, which is affiliated with Kirkuk city,” in a statement, the Ministry of Peshmerga said.

“The Peshmerga encountered the ISIS attack which resulted in the killing and wounding of several Peshmerga fighters” the statement read.

Meanwhile, ISIS losses were not reported.

During a meeting with the French Ambassador, Eric Chevalier, in Erbil, Nechirvan Barzani, the President of KRG, warned that the recent ISIS attacks pose real threats to the security and stability of Iraq, the region and the world as a whole.  

Barzani called on “the International Community and the International Coalition to brace support to Iraq and Kurdistan,” and he also pointed out that, “Iraq and its partners should work more seriously to confront terrorism and eliminate it.” 

Over the last two weeks, ISIS militants targeted civilians and Peshmerga forces in several villages in the security gap line between KRG and the southern provinces, killing at least 25 civilians and Peshmerga fighters and wounding others.
