Government, opposition escalate mutual shelling in northwest Syria

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the mutual shelling between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions continued in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria amid intense flight of Russian drones over the area.

The government forces bombed the opposition factions’ sites in the villages and towns of Sfuhen, Fleifel, Binin, Fatterah, Kansafra and Kafr Oweid in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, with heavy artillery and rockets, North Press reported military sources.

Only material damage was caused by the bombing which coincided with the intense flight of Russian drones over the targeted areas, the sources added.

The government forces’ sites near Dar al-Kabira, Milaja and Hazarin were bombed with heavy artillery and rockets by al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room, according to the sources.

This morning, the southern areas of Idlib witnessed military escalation and exchange of shelling between the government forces and opposition factions.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
