Syrian issue tops meeting of Egypt-UAE foreign ministers
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met yesterday his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, and they discussed the latest developments in Syria.
The meeting came on the sidelines of the 12th session of the annual Sir Bani Yas Forum.
The two ministers discussed the latest Arab developments, notably the crises in Libya, Syria, Yamen, and Sudan, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
They also discussed “the latest developments in the Arab region and ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries to address different challenges in the regional and international arenas,” according to the statement.
On November 9, the UAE Foreign Minister visited Damascus and met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, on his first visit to Syria in the decade since the eruption of a civil war in which several Arab states backed mainly Sunni Muslim insurgents against Assad.
While the US showed concern by meeting held between Syrian president bin Zayed in Damascus.
“We are concerned by reports of this meeting and the signal it sends,” US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said.
Following his visit to Damascus, bin Zayed headed to Jordan.
In the context, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said “Algeria considers that it is high time for Syria to return to the Arab League.”
Over the past weeks, some Arab countries have shown their readiness to restore relations with Damascus after years of political estrangement due to the war that has been going on in Syria for ten years.
