Iran’s attack on US base in Syria is a message to Israel: Israeli Journal
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The direct attack against al-Tanf base on Syrian soil likely serves as a message for both Israel and the Americans that Iranians are ready for war, Israeli Yediot Ahronot newspaper said.
In an opinion published two days ago, Ron Ben-Yishai added that the attack on Wednesday night on American al-Tanf base in Syria intended to pressure Washington, on a potential return to the 2015 nuclear deal.
Regarding the Russian role in this, Ben-Yishai pointed out that the attacks attributed to Israel in Syria embarrassed the Russians since their air defenses were unable to stop the attacks or the destruction caused, despite their claim to the contrary.
“Israel has often been successful in slowing Iranian efforts of entrenchment in Syria as well as the Lebanese based Hezbollah terror groups’ precise missile project,” he noted.
To Israel, al-Tanaf base remained outside the Syrian war because it is away from Iranian-backed militias positions and the US-led coalition troops in the base are fighting against ISIS in the first place, according to Ben-Yishai.
“It is a small base that includes 400 military personnel and civilians in addition to dozens of British and French military intelligence officers who are tasked to gather information on the remaining forces of ISIS.”
On October 21, drones targeted US military base al-Tanf, which is used by the Us-led Global Coalition, in the southeastern part of Syria near the borders with Jordan and Iraq.
Al-Tanaf military base sits on the strategic significant Damascus-Baghdad highway, in the region 55 within miles from the Jordanian border. It was established by the US-led Coalition in 2016 in the context of counter-Islamic State (ISIS) operations.
