Syrian activists launch ‘Daraa Under Siege’ campaign
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday night, activists inside and outside Syria launched a hashtag campaign on social media titled “Daraa under Siege” to shed light on the suffering of the residents of Daraa al-Balad and the besieged neighborhoods and to demand an end to the siege.
Campaign organizer Bashar Abu Sa’ifan told North Press that the campaign’s purpose is to show solidarity with the besieged people of Daraa al-Balad, al-Sad Road neighborhood, and the camp.
He added that the campaign is initially scheduled to stop 24 hours after its start, but tweets on social media may continue and they may decide to extend it.
Abu Sa’ifan pointed out that Iranian-backed pro-government factions are besieging residents in Daraa al-Balad and the surrounding neighborhoods, which led to the loss of the necessities of life, as there is no electricity, water, bread, in addition to the security chaos.
On Tuesday evening, government forces and Iranian-backed factions bombed Daraa al-Balad, the besieged neighborhoods, and the town of Umm al-Mayathen in the eastern countryside of Daraa with artillery shells.
The activist believes that the voice of Daraa’s residents must be conveyed to the international community and human rights organizations.
The negotiations between the central committees in Daraa and the government’s security committee, under the supervision of the Russian Military Police Command, did not witness any progress, according to local sources.
The United Nations previously said that 2,500 people had been displaced in Daraa due to the violence, while the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen called on all parties to adhere to the principle of protecting civilians and international humanitarian law.
